Shiatsu Massage

Origins
The name Shiatsu is from Japan. Shiatsu was developed in the East. It literally means 'finger pressure'. It has been practiced in the Orient for many years and was introduced to the West in the 1960's.

Shiatsu massage seeks to re-establish the flow of vital energy in the body. According to this ancient treatment, the human body is covered with essential lines called meridians. Energy flows along these lines. When energy is blocked, it causes dysfunction, pain and fatigue.

During a Shiatsu treatment these energy lines are stimulated to attempt to reduce tension and blocked energies. This enhances and normalises the body's ability to function and heal itself.

Practice
You don't need to remove your clothes for a Shiatsu massage as no oil is used during the treatment. This is particularly beneficial if you are shy about your body. You should wear light, loose, comfortable clothing.

Shiatsu massage is a full-body treatment which focuses on meridians. Shiatsu differs from other massage treatments in that your body is not being stroked or manipulated.

Using weight and gravity, I will work on all parts of your body in turn applying pressure to targeted areas with my fingers, hands and elbows; and stretching limbs. Depending on how you feel, I can apply gentle, medium or strong pressure. I will spend more time on trouble spots and use both fast and slow movements to stimulate and relax you. In the version of Shiatsu that I practice, you will lie on a massage table, rather than the floor.

Benefits
Clients report that, if Shiatsu massage is done regularly, it provides a greater sense of permanent energy, a stronger immune system and better general wellbeing. Clients have indicated that they feel relaxed, refreshed, sleep much better, are more focused and that they get a general lift in spirits.

Shiatsu can result in pain relief without medication. Clients have reported relief in back pain, migraines, digestive problems and tiredness.

An hour's Shiatsu Massage is £75; longer treatments cost a further £10 for each extra ten minutes; and you keep your clothes on.
